One of the best ways to improve the usefulness of your pickup is with a tonneau cover, but finding the best one for your needs can be overwhelming. If you do an online search, you will find dozens of brands and hundreds of models. Which one is right for you? Great question. Hard or Soft?

First things first, you want to decide whether a soft bed cover or a hard one is in your best interest.

Soft covers are made of vinyl, are typically black and are the least-expensive way to protect your cargo. They do a good job of protecting your contents from weather, but security can be a concern since a razor blade or pocket knife is all it takes to access the bed.

A hard cover is much more secure and certain models will be more weather-resistant than a soft cover.

Styles of Tonneau Covers Available

Once you have decided on a hard or soft cover, the next decision is what type of cover you want. Bed covers come in three major styles: one piece, rolling and folding. While a soft cover does come in all three styles, most of our descriptions reflect the advantages and disadvantages of a hard cover in these styles because they are by far the most popular design.

Solid Bed Covers

If you are looking for the most-secure cover with the best weather resistance, a solid cover may be for you. This style is designed to hinge up from the bed area closest to the cab and has lift supports to hold it in place when open. You can often get these covers painted to match your truck, or simply leave it in the standard black finish. There are a few disadvantages. It is bulky, so it can be awkward to remove and access to the side of the bed is limited. You also often need a second pair of hands to get it on and off your pickup.

Folding Models are a Great Value

One of the best values and most popular version of cover is the folding style. Imagine a hard cover that someone modified to come in three pieces. A rail system is installed on each side of the bed, giving the cover a place to attach. It is also a drain system to help keep moisture away from your cargo. When you want to open it, you simply open the tailgate and pull on a handle underneath the cover on either side.

This style can be flipped open once, twice or all three times to access the bed. You can flip it open twice and cinch it down while driving, or flip all three panels up against the cab, giving you complete bed access. We even have a model that can be easily removed and reinstalled in a matter of 1 to 2 minutes. This type of cover is a great overall value, very easy to operate and one of our most popular styles.

Rolling Tonneau Covers

If you are looking for the classiest style of bed cover, this is it. When a rolling tonneau is closed, the cover sits flush with the bed and exudes classiness. One design rolls up against the rear of the cab when you need bed access and another design rolls into a small canister in the front of the bed. They are easy to operate, very secure and do a great job protecting against the elements.
